Portara Ensemble announces its 2015/2016 season

Season Announcement (2)On Saturday, December 5 at 4:00 PM at First Unitarian Universalist Church, Portara will present its winter concert, On a Starry Night.

Ever since the first humans came into consciousness, we have looked to the night sky with a sense of awe, terror, and wonder. The mysteries of the stars have been the stuff of myth and legend, and artists have tried to capture their meaning from the moment we first learned to express ourselves.

This concert, On a Starry Night, is an attempt to connect to that larger stream of creativity that has found inspiration in the beauty of the heavens. As this is our December performance, the concert naturally includes music inspired by the star of Bethlehem that marked the place where the Christ child lay. But we’ll also sing music drawn from classic and contemporary musings on the stars which remind us that wonder is not bound by season or doctrine. Those twinkling beacons may be the most universal point of reference imaginable.

The concert will include choral works by Betinis, Thompson, Elder, Sirrett, Ticheli, and Brubeck. Portara will perform an encore performance of this concert on Sunday, December 6 at 4:00 PM at Belle Meade United Methodist Church.

On February 10, 2016, Portara will join ALIAS Chamber Ensemble on the ALIAS February concert to perform selections from their joint commission, Paul Moravec’s Amorisms.  This concert coincides with the Delos release of Portara and ALIAS Ensembles’ recording of Moravec’s Amorisms, Sacred Love Songs, and Tempest Fantasy.

On May 14, 2016, Portara will delve deeply into its roots as a collaborative Nashville ensemble, presenting “A Nashville Original.”  This concert is a celebration of Nashville-based composers and artists, coming together in new and surprising ways.
